Rationell
MITROPA – a classic rethought
What was once designed by Margarete Jahny and Erich Müller under the name “Rationell” according to strictly prescribed criteria, became known in the former GDR under the name MITROPA.
It was impossible to imagine company canteens without the series, and coffee and cake were served in many restaurants with Dederon aprons and Mitropa jugs.
On behalf of the alfi Museum in Fischbach/Rhön, we took on the project and reissued this institution of GDR table culture.
Where there was not much creative leeway back then, we now paid more attention to a more refined and modern look, but also made the thick cup rim more “bite-sized”.
However, this does not detract from the functionality; at a time when people are once again focusing more on minimalism and quality, this regional manufactory series is the perfect choice.
The cups can even be stacked with the saucer to save space, while the new gray or all-white rim gives them a timeless and urban look.
